Taiwan flies under the radar as a tourist destination. You never really hear much about it, especially compared to the likes of Thailand or even the Philippines, even though the place is pretty amazing. Awesome food, friendly people, great museums, beaches, mountains, forests… It’s one of the highlights of Asia for me and one of the best trips I’ve done
Around Taipei
Taipei 101
The National Museum is a gem. Towards the end of the Chinese Civil War when the Nationalists were evacuating to Taiwan, they took a large chunk of treasures from the Forbidden City and other locations with them. As a result to that, these items have also escaped the destruction during the Cultural Revolution and now all the best items from throughout the Chinese history sit safely here in Taipei.
The Aborigines Museum is an interesting one. I didn’t really know anything about Taiwanese history, but had assumed it had always been vaguely Chinese. Turns out it’s originally Polynesian and even today a few % of the population is made up of indigenous tribes. Tribes, longhouses and head hunting – not at all what I had imagined.
Night Markets
The night markets, and food in general, are one of the highlights of Taiwan
